Palestinian Voices

At the Arab Film and Media Institute (AFMI) we seek to continually change the narrative, share our stories, and foster understanding of our common humanity through art and storytelling. In this dire time, we want to share art that showcases the history, culture and people of Palestine through our ongoing program, Palestinian Voices.

The stories of atrocities and suffering coming from Palestine are unbearable, and the narrative in mainstream Western media is often racist and dehumanizing. Palestinian artists have a long history of using their agency - often overcoming incredible odds - to make their films and art, and to share their culture.

Join us in amplifying and listening to Palestinian Voices.

Oakland | March 2 & 3

The Oakland in-person edition of Palestinian Voices will be a weekend of Palestinian film and music to amplify and support Palestinian stories told by Palestinian creators. This program provides a look into the history of Palestine, the struggles of life under occupation, and all the things that we hold dear: the love within families, the creativity of art, the beauty of the land, and the warmth of the Palestinian people.

The Arab Film and Media Institute (AFMI) is the first organization of its kind outside the Arab world, a unique ecosystem to find, nurture and develop Arab film and media projects. It was rebranded from the Arab Film Festival in 2017 to fulfill its broader mandate to empower local Arab talent to tell their communities’ stories in their own voices. Through film, education, mentorship, and new media, AFMI’s mission is to enhance public understanding of Arab culture and provide insight into the beauty, complexity and diversity intrinsic to the Arab world.
